Operations research (OR) is a field in which people use mathematical and engineering methods to study optimization problems in business and management, economics, computer science, civil engineering, electrical engineering, etc. This series of courses consists of three parts, we focus on deterministic optimization techniques which are a major part of OR field. As the third part of this series, we study the mathematical properties of linear programs, integer programs, and nonlinear programs.
We also introduce applications of these theoretical properties: how they help us develop better ways to solve mathematical programs. After introducing the method and the importance of mathematical properties, we will examine the matrix method for implementing the simplex method. Getting more familiar with matrices will help us understand the next lectures. In this lesson, we will examine the theory and applications of duality of linear programming. We introduce properties obtained by single-dual pairs, including weak duality, strong duality, complementary aid, and how to construct a dual optimal solution given an initial optimal solution. We also introduce an important application of linear programming duality: the use of shadow prices to determine the most important constraint in a linear program.
