Distillation columns : Principles Operation & Design

Description

Distillation columns course: Principles Operation & Design. Distillation columns with different designs and applications are encountered today throughout the oil refining, petrochemical, chemical and process industries. This course is designed to give you a thorough understanding of the details of the construction and operation of distillation columns. This understanding is a prerequisite for the successful operation of your plant. This course has 5 main items:

1- Vapor liquid balance: (thermodynamics of pure components and complex mixtures)

  • Volatility of pure components: boiling point, vapor pressure
  • The concept of sensible and latent heat
  • Behavior of mixtures in distillation: dew and bubble points, evaporation curves, condensation and total/partial evaporation, separation of liquid from vapor and distribution of components based on their volatility
  • Relationship between temperature, pressure and composition of distillate and residue

2- Industrial distillation methods:

  • Industrial distillation column operating parameters (pressure, temperature, flow rate, reflux ratio…)
  • Separator power: number of steps, liquid and steam flow, feed inlet location
  • Column Pressure: Pressure control and pressure profile along the column
  • Internal flow rate profiles, concentration and temperature profiles, concentration peaks
  • Column material balance: Concepts of cut point, separation quality and fractibility
  • Thermal balance: Condenser and boiler functions, reflux and boiling ratio and industrial settings
  • Instrumentation and process control rings around the column

3- Industrial distillation equipment:

  • Trays: technology, performance, flexibility
  • Packaging (Structured or Random): Technology, Performance, Flexibility
  • Different types of contact systems for the active area: bubble caps, fixed or floating valves
  • Distributor, collector and distributor of liquid or vapor
  • Problems such as flooding, crying, pollution…

4- Evaluation of distillation column performance using ASPEN PLUS (a chemical engineering simulator)

  • base case
  • Effect of temperature
  • Pressure effect
  • Effect of feed step location
  • Effect of reflux ratio

5- Solved problems

  • Ethylene / fragile ethane
  • Reboiler operation
  • Flash separator
  • Distillation column overhead operation
  • A depropanizer case study

Numerous illustrations, cross-sectional views, diagrams, and animations are found throughout this course, enhancing the course’s value as an educational tool and industry reference for personnel involved in distillation operations. Therefore, this course is used not only for experienced engineers and operators for whom the knowledge of the distillation process is of vital importance in the efficient operation of distillation columns, but also as a study guide for undergraduate students in the fields of process engineering, chemistry, Petrochemical and oil are considered. .
