It is not said that a healthy breakfast will not help you start your day well, but if you do not eat breakfast, you will not gain weight.
New research from the University of Alabama at Birmingham has challenged the notion that breakfast affects your weight. This is perhaps the most sensitive study to date, as previous research has found only a two-way relationship between breakfast and weight, not a logical-scientific one.
So while in the past a large number of people who were overweight may be among those who do not eat breakfast, today not eating breakfast is no longer evidence of weight change.
“The issue of obesity and weight loss is riddled with untested ideas. It’s a wake-up call for all of us to ask for any evidence we hear from now on,” said David Allison, lead researcher at the University of Alabama Obesity Research Center.
A total of 309 obese and overweight adults participated in the study, some of whom were randomly advised to eat breakfast and some were told to start their day without breakfast.
There was also a control group, who did not receive any instructions about their breakfast habits. Some in this group ate breakfast and some did not.
In terms of overweight, neither group outperformed the other. And that made it clear to us that eating breakfast or not has nothing to do with losing weight. At 16-week intervals, this study was longer than all similar studies.
Despite this finding, those who have been judged are still silent about whether eating breakfast or not has an effect on weight control.
In addition, the study did not consider things like hunger levels, body fat levels and metabolism. Because when your body is deprived of food, it tends to burn fewer calories, it is still possible for you to gain weight in the long run by skipping breakfast.
Do you have to eat breakfast?
Whether you want to lose weight or not, a nutritious breakfast is still a good idea. Your brain and muscles need carbohydrates to function properly. Also, the amount of calories you get from breakfast will keep you fresh and energetic.
To help your body recover in the morning, you can try a bowl of oatmeal with almond milk and berries, or an egg omelette with spinach and mushrooms. Forget donuts and sweet cornflakes, they are high in calories. After eating them, you will be bored again quickly!
