Description
Medical Neuroscience, a medical neuroscience course, is published by Coursera Academy. Medical neuroscience examines the function and neurophysiology of the human central nervous system, while providing a neurobiological framework for understanding human behavior. In this course, you will explore the neural systems in the brain and spinal cord that realize emotion, stimulate physical activity, and integrate sensorimotor signals with memory, emotion, and cognition. The overall goal of this course is to provide a foundation for understanding the emotional, motor, and cognitive disorders associated with injury, disease, or disorder of the central nervous system. This course builds on the knowledge gained through previous studies of cellular and molecular biology, general physiology and human anatomy, while we focus primarily on the central nervous system.
This online course is designed to cover all the core concepts in clinical neurophysiology and neuroanatomy that will be presented in most first-year neuroscience courses in medical schools. However, there are topics (eg, biological psychiatry) and several learning experiences (eg, brain dissection) that we offer in the corresponding course at Duke University School of Medicine that are not offered in this online course. However, our goal is to offer a course that is completely at the level of medical school courses. This course consists of six content units that are held in 12 weeks, and another week is reserved for the comprehensive final exam:
What you will learn
- Part 1 Neuroanatomy: This part covers the surface anatomy of the human brain, its internal structure, and the overall organization of sensory and motor systems in the brainstem and spinal cord.
- Part 2 Neural Signaling: This unit deals with the basic mechanisms of neuronal excitability, signal generation and propagation, synaptic transmission, postsynaptic mechanisms of signal integration and neural plasticity.
- Part 3 Sensory Systems: In this part, you will learn about the general organization and function of the sensory systems that help us make sense of the world around us: the somatosensory systems, prejudice, vision, hearing, and balance senses.
- Part 4 Movement Systems: In this part, the structure and function of the brain and spinal mechanisms that control body movement are examined.
- Part 5 of brain development continues to focus our attention on the neurobiological mechanisms for the construction of the nervous system in embryonic development and in early life after birth; We will also examine how the brain changes throughout life.
- Part 6 Cognition: This course ends with an examination of the communication systems of the cerebral hemispheres, with an emphasis on the cortical networks that synchronize perception, memory and emotions in organizing behavior and planning for the future; We will also consider the brain systems for maintaining homeostasis and regulating the state of the brain.
