Description
Methods and Statistics in Social Sciences Specialization is published by Coursera Academy. Identify interesting questions, analyze data sets, and interpret results appropriately to make solid, evidence-based decisions. This specialization includes research methods, design and statistical analysis for social science research questions. In a final capstone project, you will apply the skills you have learned by developing your research question, collecting data, and analyzing and reporting results using statistical methods. This course covers the fundamentals of science, some history and philosophy of science, research designs, measurement, sampling, and ethics. This course is comparable to a university-level introductory course on quantitative research methods in the social sciences, but with a strong focus on research integrity. We will use examples from sociology, political science, educational science, communication science and psychology. In this course, you will learn about the basic ideas behind qualitative research in the social sciences. In qualitative research, you will learn to collect, describe, analyze and interpret data.
Qualitative research often involves an iterative process. We will focus on the components required for this process: data collection and analysis. You won’t learn how to use qualitative methods just by watching videos, so we put a lot of emphasis on collecting data through observation and interviewing and analyzing and interpreting the data collected in other assignments. Obviously, the most important concepts in qualitative research will be discussed, as we will discuss quality criteria, good practices, ethics, writing some analysis methods and mixing methods. Understanding statistics is essential to understanding research in the social and behavioral sciences. In this course, you will learn the basics of statistics. Not just how to calculate them, but how to evaluate them. This course also prepares you for the next course in the specialization – the Inferential Statistics course. The second part of this course deals with the basics of probability: calculating probabilities, probability distributions, and sampling distributions. To understand how inferential statistics work, you need to know about these things. You will not only learn about all these statistical concepts, but you will also learn to calculate and generate these statistics yourself using available statistical software.
