Operations Research (2): Optimization Algorithms, the training course in Operations Research (2): Optimization Algorithms is published by Coursera Academy. Operations research (OR) is a field in which people use mathematical and engineering methods to study optimization problems in business and management, economics, computer science, civil engineering, electrical engineering, etc. This series of courses consists of three parts, we focus on deterministic optimization techniques which are a major part of OR field. As the second part of this series, we study some efficient algorithms for solving linear programs, integer programs, and nonlinear programs.
We also introduce computer implementations for solving various programs, integer programs and non-linear programs, and as a result, an example of the application of the algorithm will be discussed. In the first part, we give a quick overview of some basic knowledge of linear algebra, including Gaussian elimination, Gauss-Jordan elimination, and the definition of linear independence. Complex linear programs were difficult to solve until Dr. George Dantzig developed the simplex method. In the next part, we first introduce the standard form and basic solutions of a linear program. We focus on the simplex method and examine how it efficiently solves a linear program. Finally, we discuss some properties of unbounded and unreachable problems that can help us determine whether a problem has an optimal solution or not.
