Skype is an application that allows the user to make voice calls over the Internet Protocol. Phone and video calls between Skype users are completely free and you need to buy credit to call landlines and mobile phones. It also offers various other features such as instant messaging, file transfer, video conferencing and voice mail.
Skype is a Peer to Peer network created by Nicholas Zenstrom of Sweden and Janus Fries of Denmark. The two have previously worked together to build a file-sharing network called Kazaa. Skype had more than 500 million users by the end of 2009.
