OpenFOAM Intermediate, an intermediate level OpenFOAM training course, is published by Udemy Academy. OpenFOAM can solve all major industrial CFD problems at the level of competitors. The power to design anything from airplanes and jet engines to pipes and heat exchangers is a simple download away. Unfortunately, OpenFOAM is very difficult to learn at first, as I first learned to use it. After learning the basics a few years ago, I quickly realized how complicated CFD can get. Even though I knew how to file and use blockMesh with a few simple solvers, it wasn’t always clear how to solve real problems knowing the basics. I started this course with a beginner’s mindset. These are the tips and tricks that gave me the most trouble in practice.
The purpose of this lesson is to show you how to do this. There are too many specialized topics that we cannot cover and learning CFD to an industry standard (where salaries above $100,000/year are not uncommon) requires a PhD and years of experience. However, when dealing with practical problems in CFD, you will need some general skills. If you can master these, in my experience, you can achieve many others on the job and quickly acquire the skills that modern engineering is moving towards.
- My main problems were:
- Turbulence: All interesting currents involve some aspect of it, and it’s often more art than science.
- meshe: Simple meshings can’t justify a fighter jet fuselage or turbine blades, I knew there had to be a better way.
- Mesh Behavior and Convergence: Without solutions to compare I never knew if I could trust my results.
