WHAT IS IT?

It is a flowering plant native to the Mediterranean region and widely cultivated as a spice, botanical and vegetable. It is  also known as Ajmood in India, Achu Mooda in Canada, and Kothambeluri in Malayalam.

It is used  is widely used in Eastern, European and American cuisines. This light green plant is a biennial in temperate regions and an annual in tropical and subtropical regions.

ITS TYPES

There are generally three different types:

Curly leaves: This type is called ordinary parsley, and is the most common type. It is often used as a seasoning in soups, stews, and other dishes.

Flat-leaf parsley: This type of parsley is called Italian parsley, and it tastes stronger than parsley with curly leaves. It is also used in stews, soups, and even in salads and sauces.

Hamburg: This type of vegetable, called German turnip or parsley root, is less versatile. This species is not used for its leaves but for its roots. Roasted, fried or chopped, added to soups or stews.

 HISTORY

The use of parsley dates back 2,000 years, before it was used as a spice in food, it was used as a medicine. The ancient Greeks believed  it to be  a sacred plant and used it to decorate the tombs of their late loved ones. The use of  parsley as  a flowering plant also dates back to Roman civilization.

Parsley contains 574% of the recommended daily amount of nutrients, and  more than three times the amount of vitamin C  found in an orange. It is also an important factor in flavonoids which are compounds that can inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells. Another important compound found in parsley is luteolin. Litholin is a cancer protective agent. In addition to preventing the metabolism of carcinogens that cause active mutations in the chromosomes of the liver.

It also contains a compound called apigenin that killed more than 86% of lung cancer cells in laboratory studies.

  • Skin sensitivity : Rubbing parsley seed oil on the skin can make it sensitive to the sun and cause itchy skin in some people. Therefore, consult your doctor before use.
  • Pregnancy and lactation problems : It is true that balanced consumption of parsley is not dangerous, but in cases of excessive use during pregnancy or lactation can lead to problems.
  • High blood pressure : In some cases, it might increase sodium in the body and raise blood pressure levels. Therefore, if you have a history of high blood pressure, be careful and consult your doctor.
  • Kidney disease : Although it improves kidney health, specific studies show that it can make the condition worse. Talk to your doctor about this.
  • Interaction in surgery : It might lower blood glucose levels and interfere with blood sugar control during surgery. Stop eating parsley at least 2 weeks before surgery.
