A diagnostic request is a special CAN frame that is sent from the test software to the embedded ECU using a special identifier defined by the OEM. Each ECU in the network has a specific ID for the diagnostic request. After receiving the request, the DUT will send the DTC status as a response to the test software. Diagnostic communication usually follows UDS and OSEK TP standard for CAN bus. Another diagnostic purpose is to flash the ECU software.

By default each ECU used has a CAN diagnostic bootloader that can be activated after a session request. When the ECU enters a diagnostic programming session, the user can transfer the binary file from the computer to the DUT. Other applications of the diagnostic layer include ECU configuration. The ECU can be configured in an extended diagnostic session. Modern cars have an off-board diagnostic interface that allows a computer (client) or diagnostic tool, called a tester, to be connected to the vehicle’s communication system. . Thus, UDS requests can be sent to controllers that must provide a response (this may be positive or negative). This makes it possible to access the fault memory of individual control units to update them with new firmware, low-level interaction with their hardware (for example turning a specific output on or off) or using functions. Specific routines (called routines) are used to try to understand the environment and operating conditions of an ECU to be able to detect faulty or otherwise undesirable behavior.
